// 02SUB-ASSEMBLYTOP OF ENGINE

The turbopump.

Two preburners spin two independent turbopumps — one rich in oxygen, one rich in methane. Both feed the main combustion chamber at temperatures the metal should not, by any reasonable metric, survive.

Oxidizer pump
21,000 rpm · 6,800 kW
Fuel pump
33,000 rpm · 8,200 kW
Mass flow
650 kg/s · liquid CH4 + LOX
Inlet temp
−183 °C · cryogenic
Outlet temp
+650 °C · post-preburner
Material
SX300 superalloy · investment-cast

// 03SUB-ASSEMBLYCOMBUSTION CHAMBER

Three hundred bar.

Inside the chamber, methane and oxygen burn at 300 bar — three hundred times atmospheric. The walls survive because we machine regenerative cooling channels through the copper-alloy liner; cold fuel runs through the wall before it ever sees the flame.

Chamber pressure
300 bar · 4,350 psi
Chamber temp
3,500 K · flame core
Liner
CuCrZr alloy · 0.8 mm wall
Cooling
Regenerative · 230 milled channels
Mixture ratio
3.6 : 1 · LOX to CH4
Burn time
600 s · per cycle, certified

// 04SUB-ASSEMBLYNOZZLE BELL

Looking up the bell.

From below, the bell looks like a cathedral. Sea-level expansion ratio is set so the exit pressure matches atmospheric at lift-off — perfectly tuned, the exhaust column stands rigid as a column of glass.

Exit diameter
1.30 m · sea-level variant
Throat diameter
0.412 m
Expansion ratio
40 : 1 · vacuum: 80 : 1
Exit velocity
3,200 m/s
Bell construction
Inconel 718 · spun + e-beam welded
Throttle range
40 – 110 % · deep throttle
